Chicago's plethora of cultural institutions ensures that
any visitor will have the opportunity to visit or just happen upon a famous
building, public art piece, or museum. Here are links to some of our favorites. Note: Most links open new windows.

- Take Home Some Art
Aside from offerings at the many museum stores available in the institutions
above, you can take home some art from your Chicago trip at these special
locations:
- Art*o*Mat Website
Created in 1997, Art*o*mat machines are retired cigarette vending
machines that have been converted to vend art. There used to be an Art*o*Mat machine in downtown Chicago: first floor, north side
of the Chicago Cultural Center, but according to the Art*o*mat site, the closest one is now at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, IL, or Kishwaukee College outside of Dekalb, IL.
- Gallery 37 Center for the
Arts
The Gallery 37 arts jobs training program was started in 1991, on
a former empty city block labeled block number 37 (visit Wikipedia for more recent developments about Block 37, aka 108 N. State Street.) From the Gallery 37
Website: "Learning and creating alongside Chicagos top
arts professionals, who serve as teaching artists, Chicago teens
learn valuable life lessons while earning a wage and polishing their
creative skills. Gallery 37 hosts programs throughout Chicago and
has been replicated throughout the US and abroad." The Gallery
37 store, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and
Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., 66 East Randolph Street, offers a wide
range of paintings, sculptures, textile scarves, woodcarvings, jewelry,
ceramics, and painted furniture. All proceeds from the sale of items
in the store go directly back to funding the programs offered by
Gallery 37.
